Portfolio Case Study

Global Competency Assurance Program

Designed and governed a global competency assurance program supporting approximately 1,000 employees across 20 locations and more than 30 positions. The program included eight IADC-accredited field positions, approximately 120 role-specific competencies within the accredited drilling scope, and more than 70,000 competency records tracked in the LMS.

The challenge

Building assurance beyond training completion

The organization already held competency accreditations for selected field positions and was pursuing accreditation for additional roles. Because the IADC Competency Assurance program was audited on a three-year cycle, the accredited scope required consistent, auditable processes for defining, assessing, documenting, and maintaining employee competency across global operations.

The broader business need extended beyond accreditation. Competency evaluations were implemented across more than 30 positions and multiple product lines to address observed knowledge and skill deficiencies, document workforce capability, identify employees requiring development, and recognize highly skilled employees who could mentor others.

Accreditation & Audit Readiness

The accredited field scope needed to maintain existing accreditations, support additional positions, and demonstrate compliance during recurring IADC audits.

Global Consistency

Assessments had to be applied consistently across approximately 20 global locations, with the broader program spanning multiple product lines and the accredited scope covering onshore and offshore field operations.

Capability Development

The organization needed a documented way to identify skill gaps while also recognizing highly capable employees who could mentor others.

Solution architecture

From competency requirements to demonstrated capability

The competency assurance process established a consistent method for defining what employees needed to demonstrate, determining who was qualified to assess them, documenting assessment results, addressing identified gaps, and maintaining auditable competency records in the LMS. The approach scaled across more than 30 positions while preserving the additional controls required for the IADC-accredited field scope.

Competency Architecture & SME Verification

Role-specific competencies were mapped across more than 30 positions and multiple product lines. Within the IADC-accredited drilling scope, approximately 120 competencies were assigned by position and reviewed with subject matter experts to verify that requirements accurately reflected field performance expectations.

Assessor Selection & Training

I designed and oversaw the assessor selection and training process so competency evaluations could be conducted consistently across geographically dispersed onshore and offshore operations.

Assessment, Development & Reassessment

Assessors evaluated employees using observation, questioning, simulation, and evidence. When an employee did not demonstrate the required competency level, the assessment documented the gap, the development plan, and a due date for reassessment.

Tracking, Governance & LMS Verification

Assessment progress and global competency compliance were tracked through reporting dashboards and regularly communicated to Executive Leadership. More than 70,000 competency records were maintained in the LMS, with supporting hard-copy documentation retained where required for audit and data-integrity verification.

My role

Leading the competency assurance program

I oversaw the implementation, governance, assessment process, learning-system integration, and external verification of a global competency assurance program supporting approximately 1,000 employees across more than 30 positions and multiple product lines.

  • Oversaw SME verification and role mapping of competency requirements across more than 30 positions, including approximately 120 competencies within the IADC-accredited drilling scope.
  • Designed and managed the assessor selection and training process to support consistent competency evaluations across global locations.
  • Coordinated program launch and kickoff meetings with operational teams to establish assessment expectations, responsibilities, and implementation timelines.
  • Tracked competency assessment progress and compliance across approximately 20 global locations, developed metrics dashboards, and provided regular reporting to Executive Leadership.
  • Oversaw processes for documenting competency gaps, development actions, reassessment requirements, and due dates.
  • Supported the identification of highly skilled employees who could serve as mentors and capability resources for employees requiring additional development.
  • Maintained alignment between assessment documentation and more than 70,000 competency records in the LMS, supporting reliable global reporting and audit readiness.
  • Led IADC audit meetings, presented program documentation and processes, and supported auditor spot-checks of employee competency records.
  • Led verification of data integrity between LMS records and required supporting documentation.
  • Supported successful IADC Competency Assurance accreditation covering eight onshore and offshore field positions while the broader competency evaluation program extended across more than 30 positions.

Impact

Why it mattered

Consistent Assurance

Established a standardized competency evaluation process that scaled across more than 30 positions, multiple product lines, and geographically dispersed operations.

Workforce Visibility

Tracked more than 70,000 competency records in the LMS and used dashboard reporting to improve visibility into demonstrated capability, development gaps, reassessment needs, and highly skilled employees who could mentor others.

External Validation

Successfully demonstrated program compliance and data integrity through the IADC Competency Assurance audit process, including spot-check verification between LMS records and required supporting documentation.
